MARCUS JORDAN’S CONTOVERSY WITH UCF AND ADIDAS OVER HIS SHOE CHOICE

October 27, 2009

If you haven’t heard on the news lately, there is quite the scandal happening at Dan and Joe’s alma mater, UCF. Marcus William Jordan son of the famous NBA star Michael Jordan is in conflict with his new school over what brand of  shoe he is intending to wear…

After leading his highschool team, “Whitney-Young” to win their 4A division championship, the 6 foot 3 guard told the press of his intentions to play at UCF over universities like Toledo, Iowa, and Davidson. Now that he’s there, more controversy has come up. Although he professes in living his own life and not his father’s, Marcus maintains a strong affiliation and responsibility to represent the family brand in which his fathers legacy has created.

This is where the trouble begins… UCF has a contract with Adidas who provides the school with jerseys, shoes and all of their athletic equipment. After Marcus simply refused to wear anything but his Jordan’s out of a personal respect for his father, UCF who was given an ”ok” by a local Adidas rep and didnt think it was a big deal anyway, said that it would’nt be a problem. Adidas is now, however, holding that this course of action calls for debate over whether Jordan’s refusal could be a potential infringement of the existing contract.

UCF’s contract with Adidas ends June 30th 2010, and there have been rumors of an extended deal with the brand for up to six more years. On Marcus not wearing Adidas, UCF says it was “led to believe that there would be a workable solution to a unique situation.”

Personally, I believe Adidas should’nt sweat one freshman not wearing a pair of its shoes, it isn’t like the whole team is dropping them as an endorser. Let him be loyal to his family and its legacy.

Check out what Dwight Howard of the Magic had to say about it “If you’re going to be on the team, you have to do what the team asks you to do,” said Howard, who has his own long-term contract to wear the Adidas brand. “That’s the only thing I can say about it.”
